Lapis is a dazzling blue gemstone that has been used for jewellery for millennia.  Lapis artefacts have been discovered from ancient Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Roman and Greek archaeological sites.  Alexander the Great brought introduced lapis from the Mediterranean to Europe.  Lapis is an ancient rock that was formed millions of year ago during the metamorphosis of lime to marble.  Lapis is a deep matt blue colour, often with gold inclusions.  These inclusions are not of gold, as some people used to think, but of pyrites.  The blue colour is caused by sulphur content of the lazurite and may range from pure ultramarine to a lighter blue.  Lapis is a softer stone that doesn’t lose its radiance over time, so embodies brilliance, softness and kindness.
